During the last two hundred years, Manhattan has witnessed an exponential increase in the volume of building mass with the ascent of the skyscraper as the city’s predominant building typology. Although developed during the same period, the network of streets remains largely unchanged and has failed to meet the evolving demands of the city.

The island’s ground plane has reached its full capacity and is now cramped with the colossal amount of infrastructure needed for transportation, power, waterworks, public safety and telecommunications. The increasing demands of tourism, leisure and recreation prompt the question: How do New York City’s infrastructure networks evolve over the next two hundred years?
